Information

What is Real-Time Text (RTT)? Real-Time Text is text transmitted instantly while it is typed or created. Recipients can immediately read the message while it is being written, without waiting. This provides continuous conversation flow in the same manner as speech, where the recipient does not need to wait for the sender to finish before reading. For more info, see realtimetext.org (R3TF).

What is XMPP?
Also called Jabber, an instant messaging standard, "The Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an open technology for real-time communication, which powers a wide range of applications including instant messaging, presence, multi-party chat, voice and video calls, collaboration, lightweight middleware, content syndication, and generalized routing of XML data." - XMPP.org (XSF)

What is XMPP In-Band Real-Time Text? This is an XMPP extension authored by Mark D. Rejhon, with assistance of key people at realtimetext.org, in order to allow Real-Time Text to be transmitted over existing Jabber/XMPP networks. It is useful as an enhancement for mainstream instant messaging, real-time transcription, captioning, as well as relay services. Apps and websites can take advantage of this standard.
The International Real-Time Text Symbol
Where is it published? XMPP.org has published this as XEP-0301 at XMPP.org/extensions. The standard is free for everyone to use and develop, and may also be used for any application, open and proprietary. See XEP-0301 at XMPP.org.

About the International Fast Text Symbol:
The symbol at the right (similar to existing symbols used in closed captioning or TTY's) is freely available for use by anyone to represent real-time text. For more information about the symbol, see www.fasttext.org
